Edward Burne-Jones - The Arming of Perseus

1885 - 88
oil (unfinished)
Private Collection
One of a series of paintings commissioned in 1875 by Arthur Balfour (later Prime Minister). This was the third work in the cycle where Perseus meets the Nereides (Sea Nymphs) who arm him with the winged sandals of Hermes, a helmet to make him invisible and the bag in which to place the head of the Medusa.
